An accumulated $56 million of Queensland rental bonds are either forgotten or forfeited since 1990.
Unclaimed Rental Bonds in Queensland
A total of 120,000 overlooked bond payments in Queensland, averaging $465 each, are now available for claiming at any time.
These unclaimed funds represent 4.5% of the Queensland Government’s Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) total bond holdings.
Areas
While Brisbane and the Gold Coast account for the bulk of unclaimed payments, areas like Morton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Logan, Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba, Ipswich, and Mackay also have renters owed rental bonds statewide.
Several factors, such as forgetfulness, typographical errors, or neglect to update contact information in the authority’s database, could lead to a renter’s bond being held by the RTA.
RTA launched a campaign last year for Queenslanders to reclaim their outstanding payments and since then the amount of unclaimed bonds has been reduced.
