Following a successful $55 million Series D funding round, Gold Coast’s Gilmour Space has now secured approval for Australia’s first orbital launch facility license.
This came under the Space (Launches & Returns) Act 2018, with Federal Minister for Industry and Science, Ed Husic, granting the license.
Ed Husic is also the minister in charge of the Australian Space Agency.
First Australian Spaceport
The Bowen Orbital Spaceport is built and operated by Gilmour Space and is located within the Abbot Point State Development Area in north Queensland.
The facility’s objective is to provide orbital launch services for satellite platforms and facilitate dedicated or rideshare launches into low Earth orbits.
Additional permits and approvals
Gilmour Space has also obtained approval from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water to operate in Abbot Point.
Pending approval of the launch permit from the Australian Space Agency, Eris TestFlight 1 is set to launch in the upcoming months.
Gilmour Space has a workforce of over 200 individuals, it is expected that they will increase their manpower to over 300 by mid-2027 as the development comes.
