The City of Gold Coast is in the process of starting an ambitious project that will not only help the environment but also transform how Gold Coasters live.
Advanced Resource Recovery Centre and the Gold Coast
The Advanced Resource Recovery Centre will be a waste and recycling plant that will not only address waste problems for the Gold Coast but will also be poised to help with the energy needs of the city in the future.
The facility will use innovative technology and will have its separate precinct.
The main focus for the ARRC are:
- Resource recovery and reuse
- Convert residual waste materials into energy
All will be done with minimising environmental impact as a priority.
The proposed location for the ARRC is in Stapylton in two adjacent sites.
What are the proposed ARRC facilities?
The sites will feature sustainable resource recovery and renewable energy facilities, including:
- A sewage treatment plant for northern suburbs
- Recycled water treatment plant for Class A recycled water
- Recycling facility for citywide recyclable material sorting
- Construction and demolition processing facility
- Processing facility for organics
- Waste-to-energy facility for landfill diversion and green electricity production
- Green hydrogen electrolysis plant
ARRC aims to attract industries and promote a circular economy.
Benefits of the ARRC to the Gold Coast
- Address growing solid waste and sewage treatment demands
- Eliminate the need for new landfills
- Divert up to 98% of waste from current landfills
- Boost recycling possibilities
- Improve the environment, minimising greenhouse gas emissions
- Lower city energy expenses
- Produce renewable energy for a cleaner city
- 2000 jobs during construction
- 170 permanent full-time jobs during operation.
Currently, the project is in the “feasibility stage” as the “pre-feasibility study” phase has been completed last year.
