Toowoomba, July 16, 2024 — The Mt Kynoch water treatment plant in Toowoomba officially reopened yesterday following a $40 million Stage 4 upgrade aimed at enhancing the reliability of the region’s water supply.
Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant Upgrade
Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald highlighted the significance of the investment by the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC).
According to the mayor, a secure water supply is central to the quality of life and the continued growth of the region.
The water treatment plant enhancements will provide water security until 2031, which will cater for population growth forecasts.
The upgrade increases the plant’s capacity by an additional 16 megalitres per day by 2031, with an ultimate staged conventional treatment capacity of 65 megalitres per day.
Additional improvements
The improvements include the addition of ultraviolet disinfection as an extra treatment barrier, which significantly advances water quality and community health benefits.
Originally built in 1975, the plant required modernisation to meet the region’s growing needs.
Toowoomba Deputy Mayor and Strategic Water Planning and Capital Delivery portfolio spokesperson Rebecca Vonhoff detailed further enhancements, including the following:
- improved chemical management
- new chemical dosing systems
- a duplicate 240-meter section of raw water main in Shuttlewood Court
- a new valve house
- replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment
“Completion of the latest enhancements follows a multi-year, multi-stage program to increase capacity and improve water treatment methods. These improvements will ensure a secure and reliable water supply remains our highest priority,” Cr Vonhoff said.
The upgrade works were executed by contractor Fulton Hogan Utilities Pty Ltd.
