The Redlands Coast islands are set to benefit from a substantial $7.20 million investment in infrastructure, as outlined in the Redland City Council’s 2024–2025 Budget.
The funds will support a variety of projects including road upgrades, foreshore protection, and the design of a new community building.
Infrastructure Budget Breakdown for the Redlands Coast Islands
Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell announced that $3 million will be allocated to the ongoing green sealing of roads on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI). “Council’s investment in these road upgrades and other infrastructure enhances our islands as attractive places to live and visit,” she said.
In addition, $140,000 has been earmarked for the renewal of swimming enclosures on North Stradbroke (Minjerribah) and Macleay islands.
A further $200,000 will be used to design a new community building on Macleay Island.
The budget also includes more than $913,000 for foreshore protection across Macleay and Russell Islands.
Other island communities will see new or improved footpaths, along with upgrades to drainage systems.
Division 2 Councillor Peter Mitchell highlighted significant investments for North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), including:
- $245,900 for road renewals on Kennedy Drive and an unnamed road near Dickson Way at Point Lookout.
- $162,000 for a culvert renewal on Barton Street, Dunwich.
- $40,000 for carpark renewal at Cylinder Beach.
- $400,000 for upgrades to the Point Lookout sewerage pump station.
- $190,000 for footpath rehabilitation on Stradbroke Place.
- $100,000 for the renewal of the Amity Point swimming enclosure.
Additional funding includes $140,000 for seawall and causeway renewal on Junner Street, Dunwich, $20,000 for drainage renewal on Bingle Road, and $5,000 for road upgrades and intersection safety improvements in Amity Point.
Division 4 Councillor Lance Hewlett mentioned that $220,000 has been allocated for two projects on Coochiemudlo Island, including $120,000 for footpath expansion on Victoria Parade South and $100,000 for carpark and drainage improvements at the Coochiemudlo Ferry.
Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls announced nearly $5.50 million for capital investment in the SMBI, emphasising the expansion of the green sealing program. He added that funding will also support:
- Foreshore protection on Russell Terrace and Cliff Terrace on Macleay Island, and at Jock Kennedy Park on Russell Island.
- A $600,000 drainage upgrade and expansion at Mango Crescent, Russell Island.
- A $356,000 new footpath on Brighton Street, Macleay Island.
- $15,000 for footpath expansion on High Street, Russell Island.
Other projects include:
- $50,000 for landside facility upgrades at Alice Street.
- $25,000 for drainage upgrades on Bamboo Street, Russell Island.
- $40,000 for renewal of the Pat’s Park swimming enclosure.
- $20,000 for traffic queuing improvements at the ferry carpark barge ramp on Macleay Island.
