Gold Coast, Australia — Michael James, 53, the brave pilot who miraculously survived a catastrophic helicopter collision last year, has passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.
Hero Pilot Succumbs to Cancer
James, who was widely celebrated for his extraordinary efforts in the aftermath of the January 2023 crash, died on May 24.
James skillfully guided his severely damaged helicopter to a safe landing on a sandbank after a mid-air collision with another aircraft.
The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of four people and left nine others injured, including three critically.
Among the injured were Kiwi tourists Elmarie Steenberg, Riaan Steenberg, Edward Stewart, and Marle Stewart.
In the moments following the crash, James was seen heroically pulling survivors from the wreckage, prioritising their safety over his injuries.
His actions were lauded by many, including surviving passengers.
An investigative report later revealed that James did not recall hearing a standard taxiing call from the other pilot before the collision, a critical factor in the tragic accident.
Michael James left behind his wife and was honoured in a private funeral service on June 4.
His legacy as a hero endures in the hearts of those he saved and in the memories of those who knew him.
