Gold Coast’s Junior Council, representing 170 students from 37 schools, gathered at CBUS Stadium yesterday to mark the 8-year countdown to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The event, held at the future Olympic football venue, featured workshops, inspirational talks, and a celebration of Australian pride.
Acting Mayor Donna Gates, along with Olympic gold medallists Brooke Hanson and Sara Carrigan, attended the event and noted the growing excitement for the Paris Olympics.
“The Olympics always bring a special energy, and we feel a sense of pride every time an Australian athlete excels,” Acting Mayor Gates said. “To think that in just eight years, this excitement will be in our own backyard is extraordinary.”
The students joined Acting Mayor Gates, Ms. Hanson, and Ms. Carrigan in a rousing cheer of “Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi” before forming a giant figure 8 on the field. “These young people are the Gold Coast’s future leaders,” Acting Mayor Gates said. “In eight years, we may see them playing a key role in our homegrown Olympics and Paralympics.”
To further fuel Olympic fever, the City of Gold Coast will host a live viewing site at Broadwater Parklands this weekend, featuring a big screen, free activities, and food trucks.
Additionally, several landmarks, including the Surfers Paradise sign and Isle of Capri Bridge, will be illuminated in green and gold throughout the Paris games.
