The Queensland Government is investing heavily in a new rail line linking the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane and South East Queensland.
New Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line project
The new rail line project aims to provide a quick, reliable, and sustainable transport option, cutting travel time by at least 45 minutes compared to driving.
Stage 1 of the project, from Beerwah to Caloundra, will feature a 19 km dual track, the longest spur line in the southeast passenger network.
An initial $2.75 billion is committed to Stage 1, it will also include rail alignment protection up to Maroochydore.
The total Stage 1 budget is expected to be between $5.5 billion and $7 billion but the final cost will be known after the procurement phase is done.
The Federal Government has pledged $1.6 billion.
The Beerwah to Caloundra stage could be operational by Brisbane 2032 Olympics with Federal Government matching funds.
Future stages will extend the line to Birtinya and Maroochydore, enabling trains to reach speeds of 140 km per hour and providing a direct link between the Sunshine Coast’s growth areas and South East Queensland’s rail network.
