Redland City libraries will take part in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on Wednesday, May 22.
The event brings together libraries, schools, and childcare centres across Australia and New Zealand to read a book at the same time.
This year, the chosen book is “Bowerbird Blues” by Aura Parker.
Mayor Jos Mitchell said library staff have been preparing for the big day. “Our libraries are decorated, and the staff are ready with fancy dress,” she said. “You’ll find handmade decorations, like stained-glass window displays and little bowers decorated with blue items.”
The story centres around a bowerbird gathering blue objects, but it feels something is missing.
After the reading, children and their caregivers can enjoy a free craft activity, making paper plate bowers and bowerbird puppets.
National Simultaneous Storytime is in its 24th year. It’s the largest shared reading event in Australia, organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).
Last year, over two million children participated. ALIA Acting CEO Trish Hepworth said the event highlights the importance of libraries and the joy of reading together.
NSS is free and open to children aged 0 to 8. No reservations are required.
If you’re near a Redland City library, you can drop in to join the fun.
