Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is upgrading Melrose Road, Brookstead, replacing the existing timber bridge with a two-lane concrete bridge to enhance safety and traffic flow.
Toowoomba Councill Initiative for Safety and Convenience
Toowoomba Mayor Geoff McDonald revealed that the $3.2 million project is funded in part by the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program ($2.55 million) alongside the Regional Council of Toowoomba.
The project aims to enhance connectivity along the crucial agricultural industry route and most importantly for safety reasons.
Mayor McDonald said “Council’s regular inspection program identified that the old timber bridge has reached the end of its service life. The new bridge will be constructed to current engineering standards on the same alignment over the Condamine River North Branch,”.
Melrose Road is scheduled for closure until December 2024, subject to weather conditions, to facilitate the safe demolition of the old bridge, construction of the new bridge, and related roadworks.
Alternative routes via Brookstead-Norwin Road, Branchview Road, Ladner Road, and Pampas-Horrane Road will be available, with signage provided to aid motorists.
The Council regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this period of construction.
