Last week, the Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) officially endorsed a submission for the potential upgrade of the Toowoomba Sports Ground as part of the Queensland Government’s 60-Day Independent Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Venue Master Plan Review.
Toowoomba Sports Ground Upgrade Submission and Review
Led by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, the 60-day review, initiated by Queensland Premier Steven Miles, sought input from TRC regarding the potential economic benefits associated with upgrading the Toowoomba Sports Ground.
Nick Hauser, TRC’s General Manager of Environment and Community Services, stated that while the Council decided to submit proposals to the State Government during last week’s Ordinary Meeting, the final decision on the upgrade’s progression lies with the State.
He also clarified that any decision on upgrading the Toowoomba Sports Ground rests with the Queensland State Government, which owns and operates the venue and surrounding land.
The council does not hold decision-making authority on the project’s progress.
Other proposals
The council also took the opportunity to propose the Toowoomba Showgrounds and Equestrian Centre as an alternative Olympic and Paralympic Venue with suitable investment by the State Government.
The Showgrounds, with prior financial support from the Council for a completed business case, could potentially evolve into the Toowoomba Equestrian Centre of Excellence.
