Redland City Council has unveiled its top 10 priorities to be presented to all candidates and political parties in the upcoming 2024 Queensland state election.
This list aims to advocate for critical infrastructure, community projects, and solutions to pressing issues in the Redlands Coast community ahead of the October 26 election.
Top 10 Redland City Council Priorities for 2024 Queensland Election
Mayor Jos Mitchell emphasised the importance of building strong relationships with other government levels, particularly the State Government. “Council will work collaboratively with the state government and successful Members of Parliament after the October election to progress these identified projects for the benefit of the community,” she stated.
The 10 priorities Items
- Weinam Creek Transport Connectivity: Advocacy for funding a multi-level Park ‘n’ Ride within the Weinam Creek PDA, to enhance public transport connectivity between the mainland and Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
- Brisbane Metro Network Extension: In collaboration with Brisbane City Council, pushing for the state to develop a business case and detailed designs for extending the busway from Coorparoo to Capalaba.
- Redland Coast Islands Recognition: Seeking regional status recognition for Redlands Coast islands to address planning and funding challenges through state and federal collaboration.
- Toondah Harbour Upgrades: Requesting detailed plans and funding for port infrastructure upgrades at Cleveland’s Toondah Harbour, which handles one million passengers and 200,000 vehicles annually.
- Housing for Vulnerable Communities: Advocating for increased emergency and crisis accommodation for vulnerable groups, particularly Redlands Coast youth.
- Improved Native Title Process Clarity: Seeking greater clarity and state involvement in Native Title processes to reduce uncertainty.
- Wellington Street / Panorama Drive Upgrades: Advocating for $80 million to concurrently complete stages two and three of the upgrade program.
- Review of Community Residence Provisions: Proposing a review of the Planning Regulation 2017 to better align with local planning overlays and community amenities.
- Increased Utilization of State-Owned Facilities: Advocating for a Strategic Partnership Commitment to address sporting infrastructure deficits and increase participation through state-owned land and facilities.
- Local Health Services: Pushing for a commitment to maintain adequate health services in line with the substantial population growth on Redlands Coast.

Mayor Mitchell noted that the Council’s advocacy program is continuously evolving to reflect the community’s priorities.
“Many of these priorities are already in motion through Council’s operational plan or resolutions to the Local Government Association of Queensland annual conference,” she said. “They also need to be in front of all candidates and parties during the state election campaign.”
